Thought I found a Catch 22 in the retirement process this morning. The Office of Personnel Management demands that prospective retirees have filed for Social Security Disability Income before approving the retirement. But SSDI won’t consider an application while you’re still working. And I have to keep working until my retirement is approved, because I need the money.
So, I spoke to one of our HR people who explained there’s a form I can file to let the SS know I’ve submitted an application, and it will serve the OPM’s purposes by indicating that as soon as I am officially retired, I will file for SSDI.
She will send me the requisite paperwork on Monday.
Also, took a look at my leave balances today. Unless I’m mistaken, I can’t take my unused leave with me. So, sometime before I retire — whenever that is — I have seven work weeks of annual leave and sick leave to use up.
I’ll wait a bit, see how this thing is playing out, then I think I’ll take February off, then April.
